I find the two results very interesting. The personality test is made on the five factor model, for the subject of extroversion, my score on Extraversion is low, indicating I am introverted, reserved, and quiet. The result said that “ you enjoy solitude and solitary activities. Your socializing tends to be restricted to a few close friends.” According to my mother, I scored 40 on my extroversion subject, which also indicates I am very introverted. But my friend gave me 80 on the subject. I believe the two results are true to a degree. As for my true personality, I am indeed tend to be quiet, low-key, deliberate, and disengaged from the social world. In my spare time, I love reading. But as a matter of fact, people enjoy being around me, they perceive me as extremly friendly, out-going, funny and easy to be with. Thus, I often being invited to all kinds of party, which make my private time more precious and I tend to treasure alone time more. I guess the result of personality test can capture the tendency of one’s personality, but it does not fully reflect the the personality of the people. For example, although I prefer to be alone, my social life is actually very diverse and have a lot of friends. I do not lack the exuberance and energy to engage with others. Also, the test of friend and family only capture part of my personality. For the subject of agreeableness, my level of Agreeableness is average, indicating some concern with others’ Needs, but, generally, unwillingness to sacrifice myself for others. I find this very wrong and I doubt it if I fill the form wrong. I am very willing to help others as long as I could, and find helping other people genuinely rewarding. I do treat helping others as a kind of self-fulfillment. At the same time, people perceive me as extremely tender-hearted with compassion. Every time my friends encounter a problem, I am the one they first want to talk to. And I am very good at reading other people’s minds which is a trait of agreeableness. I notice maybe because I have a very low score on modesty, which drags down the score of the agreeableness. While the low score on modesty do not make me disagreeably arrogant by other people. Actually, the test from friend and family tells more truth, they scored me 80 and 90 on this subject, I find them fairly accurate. For the subject of conscientiousness, my score on conscientiousness is average. This means I am reasonably reliable, organized, and self-controlled. I agree with this result. But for the dutifulness, my score is really low which indicates me to be seen as unreliable or even irresponsible.. While the truth is opposite. I have been staying up all night several time just to finish my job and meet my responsibility. Thus it is not a fair statement. The test from friend and family scored me 80 and 90 on this subject, I find them fairly accurate. As for the subject of Neuroticism and Openness to Experience, the results of the personality test are quite accurate, and the test by friend and family shows similar result. My anxiety level is very low, I am generally calm and fearless, according to the textbook, I think my defense mechanism is rationalization, I would like to make acceptable reasons for outcomes that are otherwise unacceptable .
According to the results, I do believe that it can find out some hidden and internal characteristic of one person, but I find that the personality test is lack of the ability capture of spirit of the person, it can only conclude some information based on the limited information given, while, people are live creatures and they are pluralistic, it is hard to come out the accurate conclusion with limited questions. Just as the shortcoming of Lexical Approach, many traits are ambiguous, metaphorical, obscure, or difficult, it is hard to capture by several questions. While, the test by friend and family tend to be more accurate, because they value you based one the interactions with you. While, sometimes it can only capture part of of the personality.
